Keep the colours straightforward

An olive long-sleeved top, blue flared jeans and white chunky trainers already form a complete combination. You do not need further green accents. Check the top hem against the waistband and decide whether to leave it loose or partially tuck it in. With a closer-fitting top, make sure it settles comfortably after you raise your arms rather than remaining pushed upwards and needing repeated adjustment during the day.

Connect the hem to the sole

Flared jeans widen toward the bottom, making the length over the shoe especially important. Put on the intended trainers and walk, turn and step up. The hem can touch the shoe but should not move beneath your heel. A higher sole may work differently from a flat spare pair. Test each version rather than assuming one suitable length will automatically work with every shoe you own.

Check the waistband while seated

Sit down and bend your knees. Even though the lower leg is wide, the waistband and upper legs may fit more closely. Check pockets and fastening in this position. A belt should not be required to hold together an otherwise uncomfortable fit. If you want it as a detail, try it with the top hem so the two edges do not press awkwardly over one another.

Choose a suitable outer layer

A simple jacket can support the quiet palette. Try its sleeves over the long-sleeved top, especially if the top's surface creates more friction. For longer routes, choose a bag that leaves your hands available. Finally, check the jeans hem with the bag filled and while walking a little faster. This assesses the combination for an actual city journey rather than only a carefully maintained standing position. Make the adjustment before leaving.
