Repeat black in two places

A black top beneath a camel coat and a black wide-brimmed hat create a clear colour repetition. The bag does not also need to be black; a quiet brown can pick up the coat. Begin with simple dark trousers on the lower half. This distributes black across several areas without introducing another bright shade. If the hat already feels sufficiently noticeable, leave out a large necklace or strongly patterned scarves initially. An outfit does not need to draw attention to as many details as possible at the same time.

Check the brim for your journey

A wide hat changes how you move through doorways, crowded transport or narrow cloakrooms. Before leaving, check that you can look comfortably sideways and upwards. On a windy day, a hat that needs continual holding is not especially practical. You can wear the same combination without it; the black top still connects with the trousers. If you plan to remove the hat at your destination, think about where it can rest. A bag that requires the brim to be sharply folded is not automatically a suitable place to carry it.

Keep an option for days without the hat

On a day spent mostly indoors, replace the hat with a smaller dark detail, such as a simple scarf when the temperature calls for one. The coat and black top can stay the same. For a lighter effect, change the trousers instead without abandoning the upper combination. Try adjustments individually so you can see what each one does. After wearing it, hang the coat without leaving its collar pulled by a bag strap. Store the hat according to its shape and care instructions so the brim feels comfortable next time.
