Read what the photograph actually shows
The black-and-white rear view shows a light-coloured coat draped loosely over black straps crossing at the back. The contrast between a broad pale layer and a distinct dark detail is easy to adapt with a few pieces already in your wardrobe.
Choose your own lower half
For your own version, try a light-grey, cream or beige coat over a black strappy top. Choose the lower half for the occasion: straight trousers for a restrained evening combination or jeans for something more casual. Choose a waistband that remains comfortable beneath your preferred top.
Decide whether to drape or wear the sleeves
A coat resting on the shoulders can look effortless in a still image but become inconvenient during a journey. Carrying a bag, opening doors or boarding public transport may cause it to slip. Put your arms through the sleeves for those parts of the evening and check whether you still enjoy the combination.
If you want an open shoulder area, a suitably cut light jacket may be easier to manage. With crossed straps, also check that the top stays where you want it while sitting and turning. The back detail should not require you to adjust your clothing throughout the evening.
Plan for changing temperatures
An open back feels different outdoors from inside a heated room. Before leaving, decide whether the coat offers enough warmth and consider another top if needed. A similarly dark top with a covered back can preserve the same light-and-dark contrast.
Keep additional details manageable. A small bag may be easier to combine with a draped layer than a heavy shoulder strap. In rain, casually resting a coat across the shoulders becomes less practical anyway. A layer you can wear comfortably closed matters more than reproducing the exact pose that makes the photograph interesting.
