Make sure you can wear the outer layer properly
A long fitted dress with an open shoulder line and front slit needs a coat you can actually wear comfortably in fresh air. Try it with your arms through the sleeves rather than merely carrying it. The shoulders and sleeves should provide enough space without shifting the dress neckline sharply when you fasten the coat.
Test the dress for transport
Sit on a chair in the complete outfit and stand again. Check whether the skirt pulls while seated and how the slit falls. A roomier skirt shape may feel easier for a longer journey. Your choice should not depend on remaining perfectly upright and still throughout the trip simply to keep the dress looking arranged.
Set the hem against the footwear
Heels are one possibility but are useful only if you want to move in them. Try the dress length with the planned pair. If you use other shoes for travelling, test that height as well. A dragging hem needs another solution than constant holding; an alteration or deliberately shorter length can make the evening significantly simpler.
Consider hands and coat storage
Choose a bag that is straightforward to carry alongside a coat and long skirt. A strap can help when opening doors or handling tickets. Check whether the venue provides somewhere to leave outerwear. Keep jewellery quiet at first so the shoulder line and dress shape remain clear. Before leaving, test the complete outfit in movement instead of assessing every accessory separately in the mirror.
